Choose the colour on the wall, not on a chip.

A 50mm square in a hardware shop in Wuse tells you almost nothing about what a colour does to a room. Pick one below and watch it land on a real wall first.

The colour

Twelve colours, put on a real wall.

These are the twelve we mix most often, named after the things they actually look like here. Tap one and it goes on the wall — and on everything else on this page, which is the fastest way to find out whether you can live with it.

The blue of a good wax print, one shade off black. Swallows light, so keep it to one wall unless the room faces north.

Preparation

Paint is the last fifth of the job.

Almost every complaint about a paint job in this city is really a complaint about what was underneath it. Emulsion over damp comes back as bubbles in June. Emulsion over dust comes off with the first wipe.

So we test the wall before we quote it, and the quote says which of the three it is: sound, needs screeding, or wet and needs finding out why first. The price in the calculator below changes with that answer, because the work does.

What it costs

Measure the room, get the number.

Give us the dimensions and the state of the walls and this works out the area, the litres, the days and the price. It is the same arithmetic we do on site, so the quote should not surprise you.

We do not paint into dust.

Between late November and February the air carries enough fine dust to settle into wet emulsion and leave a bloom you cannot wipe off. We seal the room, damp the floors, and where a job cannot wait we schedule the finish coats for the early morning before the wind picks up.

    How we work

Three habits, from painting about two hundred rooms a year.

    01

A litre on your wall first

Before a big job we paint a square metre in the actual room and leave it two days, because a colour changes completely between the fluorescent tube in a shop and your own light at seven in the evening. It costs us a litre and it has stopped a lot of repaints.

    02

We move it, we cover it, we put it back

Furniture to the middle, sheeted, and sockets and frames masked properly rather than cut in by eye. The room you get back is the room you left, in a different colour.

    03

Offices at night, houses in daylight

Nobody wants a painter in the corridor at eleven in the morning. Commercial jobs run from 18:00 and over weekends at no extra charge, because it is easier for us too.

    Book a look

Someone comes and looks at the wall. Free.

Forty minutes, anywhere in the FCT. We test the surface, measure properly, and leave you a fixed price the same day.
